I learned two things at Target that I will take with me for the rest of my life.

The first thing I learned was the value of customer service. Working as a Cart Attendant in the Guest Services department of one of the busiest stores in the district, I saw firsthand how just a small personal commitment to delivering superior customer service can make all the difference. Every day at Target I tried my best to greet everyone with a smile and show them the basic respect I believe they deserve as fellow human beings.

And the result? People smiled back and treated me with respect. Great respect. And much love. So much love in fact that it never failed to humble me.

And make me want to give even more. And I will never forget that.

The second thing I learned was the value and strength of a team. Prior to Target I had not experienced what it was like to work as a member of a team. I had always been more of a person who preferred to work alone.

Not that I didn't like people or appreciate their sincere contributions. Just that I have always had very high standards and I guess I was a little guilty of not trusting others to deliver the same level of quality that I knew I could if I did it myself.

But working at Target changed all that. Our store was so busy it was not uncommon for me to have three or four jobs to complete but only time enough for two.

So out of necessity I called out to the team for help.

And the team came through! Many times in ways I would not have imagined had I done the job myself. Better and smarter ways. And again I was humbled. And again I grew as a person.

I learned to trust people at Target. I learned to be a team player. And I will never forget that.

Today I am a better person because of my experience working at Target.

And for that I am grateful.
